Circumstances:	I'd been away - this is what I was told, but he may have left before. He's always stayed around the local green area, or in the house via the cat-door. He may have been frightened by a child visiting, or possibly another cat entering the house.
Other info:	He was a wild cat for years so is extremely wary of people. May hide for a long time as he's afraid ... better to let him approach you, for food.
